One Country the Reformation deeply effected was ENGLAND and its King, HENRY VIII (8th)
Henry would change England’s RELIGION solely to get him two things he wanted – a DIVORCE and a SON!

It was not common or easy to get a DIVORCE in the 1500’s – even for a powerful King!

The only way he could get a Divorce was by asking the POPE

Henry was a very proud King and hated the fact he had to do this

WHAT HAPPENED?
Henry was furious when the Pope said NO!!

Henry’s only hope was to make the Church of England a PROTESTANT church and put HIMSELF in charge!!!

Then he could give himself a DIVORCE!!

This he did and at last he could marry ANNE BOLEYN

This immediately solved Henry’s problem. However, what followed were years of RELIGIOUS CONFLICT as Henry and his children switched between the Catholic and Protestant religions with devastating results.

WHAT DID THE POPE DO ABOUT HENRY?

The Pope was so angry about Henry’s changes that he EXCOMMUNICATED HIM!!!
This means he was expelled from the Catholic church!

Henry died at quite a young age and the son he always wanted – EDWARD- became King at the age of only 9!!!!

Although Edward is so young he is also a very determined and serious PROTESTANT.
He changes the church in England completely, making it very Protestant:
Stained glass windows and statues are taken out of churchesChurches are much plainer with much less goldPriests can get married and can wear their own clothesThe Bible and services are in ENGLISHEdward stops his sister Mary from taking Catholic MassHe also treats many Catholics cruelly for their beliefs

Mary had also had Lady Jane Grey and her family killed for plotting to take the throne.

She was replaced by a Protestant Queen who would want to make Catholic Mary seem like a danger to Protestants and England

Mary only remained Queen for 4 years. Towards the end of her reign she thought she was pregnant with an HEIR. This would guaranteed England would remain Catholic. In fact her stomach had swollen because she was gravely ill with cancer. Against all the odds, her Protestant sister ELIZABETH would take over England.
