IN THE 1500’s RELIGIOUS DIFFERENCES DIVIDED EUROPE!

In the late 1500’s Queen Elizabeth 1 faced a deadly challenge to her power!
KING PHILIP II of Spain wanted to attack England with a huge fleet of ships called an ARMADA. He wanted to knock the Protestant Queen Elizabeth off the throne and replace her with his Catholic daughter.

We are going to look into WHY he wanted to do this and WHAT went so badly wrong for him.

Like many things in History, the Armada actually didn’t just have one simple cause. Instead it was a build up of factors which led to the deadly events of the Armada in 1588.

You will have to know and understand these SIX causes.

By 1588 KING PHILIP of Spain had had enough!!!

He wanted England to be a Catholic countryHe was being encouraged to attack by the Pope. His treasure ships were being attacked and robbed by English Pirates.Elizabeth was also supporting his enemies in the Netherlands.To top it all Elizabeth had rejected his marriage proposal and .. had executed her own Catholic cousin – Mary Queen of Scots!! He felt this was now the time to act!!!

He ordered his commander to get ready to sail the Armada to England!!
Unfortunately the commander DIED before he could even sail! Philip chose a replacement –
THE DUKE OF MEDINA SEDONIA. What a choice!!!!
This Duke not only did NOT want to be commander BUT he also got SEA SICK!!!
It was the first bad sign that not everything would go well for the Armada!

Philip had a very clear plan of what he wanted!!

It was complicated but, if it worked, he would control England , Elizabeth would be dead and England would once again be Catholic

One of the great skills in History is the ability to ANALYZE. To be able to look at an event like this and be able to EXPLAIN what exactly went wrong.

So what did go wrong?
You might say… it was the bad choice of Spanish Commander! He was seasick and didn’t even want to be there!
Or may be .. it was the Fire ships.. they were fantastic at breaking up the Armada making it easier to attack.
