The Reformation 1

THE REFORMATION: INTRODUCTION

WAR has many causes but one of the most common is when people’s religion or beliefs do not agree.

In the 15th CENTURY the world’s biggest religious organisation, the ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH,  began to find its belief’s being QUESTIONED.Many people CRITICISED the church and protested for REFORM (Change). These ‘PROTESTERS’ became known as PROTESTANTS.

You should remember from your Year 8 history that Religion was VERY IMPORTANT in people’s lives in the Middle Ages:

  • Almost EVERYONE went to church and many people’s lives revolved around religion from the moment they were born until they died.
  • Many people went on expensive PILGRIMAGES (Religious journeys) to get cured or blessed.
  • People paid vast amounts of MONEY to the church, making it the wealthiest organisation in the world.
  • The head of the Catholic church – the POPE- was perhaps the most important person on earth!

HOWEVER, in the 1400’s, (after the Black Death) people began to really question some of what the Catholic church believed. Look at the criticisms below:

There had always been criticisms of the Catholic church and demands for reform but in the 1400’s TWO things really led to the church splitting:

1) THE PRINTING PRESS WAS INVENTED
The invention of the first printing press meant that books and information were now CHEAP and widely AVAILABLE for all to read.

It was like the INTERNET of its day! It meant ideas could spread quickly
It meant the Bible could be printed in different languages – that people could read for themselves!
It meant many more people could read the Bible for themselves and also to read other peoples ideas about the teachings of the bible, the church and the criticisms of it.

Martin Luther was a German Catholic monk who became one of the most influential reformers
He felt the church really needed reform
He wanted priests to be able to marry
He did not believe in the power of the Pope
He believed people could talk to God directly through prayer and they didn’t need a Priest to do it.

Luther’s ideas were very popular and were spread quickly through the power of the printing press. His supporters started the LUTHERAN CHURCH

His followers became known as PROTESTANTS. (As they were protesting for reform of the Catholic church)
